Wood, Light, and Detail: The Sorpetaler Approach

Floor-to-ceiling wood-framed windows in a modern building interior with hanging pendant lights

Sorpetaler Fensterbau has been making wood windows in the Sauerland region of Germany for over a century. That kind of history isn’t a marketing line; it’s an accumulation of decisions about how to work with wood: which laminations stay stable in which climates, how a profile sheds water for decades, how a finish ages, how hardware should sit in a frame so it still operates smoothly a generation later.

Wood, deliberately

Plenty of manufacturers treat wood as a legacy material. We treat it as the point. Wood frames are warm to the touch, quiet, structurally honest, and endlessly adaptable: they can be milled to a historic profile or a knife-edge modern one. Where a project wants lower exterior maintenance, we clad the outside in aluminum and keep the wood where you live with it: inside.

Custom as the operating model

Because every order is manufactured to the project, the questions we ask are different. Not “which size on the chart is closest?” but “what does the architecture need?” A window wall aligned to a sightline. A sash proportioned to a 1920s facade. Divided lites that match the originals down the street. This is what we mean by Custom = Standard: project adaptation is not an upgrade path; it is the production line.

Detail is a performance feature

The same precision that makes a profile beautiful makes it perform. Tight tolerances mean gaskets compress evenly. Well-engineered laminations mean frames stay square, so multipoint locks keep sealing year after year. Glazing packages are chosen per project (orientation, climate, comfort targets) rather than bundled into trim levels.

And now, the US

Bringing this to American projects takes more than shipping crates across the Atlantic. It means US terminology, US-readable documentation, support for rough openings and installation details, and a service path on this side of the ocean. That is the work of Sorpetaler USA: the craftsmanship stays German; the project experience is American.
